All You Need to Know About Your Car Battery

No one argues the car battery is one of the most essential components of any vehicle. Without it, you’d never be able to start your car. The battery converts mechanical energy to electrical energy when starting, then charges while the engine is running.

How Long Do Car Batteries Typically Last?

Although batteries last anywhere from three to five years, you’ll drain it faster if you leave the lights on after you park it or if you leave it standing alone for long periods of time (i.e. an airport parking lot). Just be mindful when you leave your car so you won’t have to ask your neighbor for a jump start.  

One of the most important components of your car battery system is the alternator.

The Importance of a Fully Functional Alternator

The alternator translates electric energy into mechanical energy, and vice versa, to keep your engine running after it starts. It also charges the battery while the engine is running. Your engine isn’t able to run for lengthy periods of time if the alternator malfunctions. How will you know if your alternator is malfunctioning? You’ll notice any one of several tell-tale signs:

1. Do you smell burning rubber? If so, the V-belt  or serpentine belt is overheating and you need to get the alternator’s cooling fan replaced.  

2. Do you have a dashboard warning light? Are your headlights dimming? Since the alternator is involved with electrical energy in your system, you’ll notice the electrical components struggling if your alternator is malfunctioning.

3. Do you hear weird noises coming from the alternator? The belt pulley may be loose, in which case you need only to tighten it instead of replacing the entire alternator.
