How to Clean your Car Lights for Fall

Can you believe it’s already September? Nights are getting longer and the rainy, foggy season is upon us. Driving conditions get a bit more serious this time of year. It’s important to keep your vision unimpaired when you’re driving.

So what can you do to help you see better through the dark, rain, and fog?  We recommend shining your car lights. Even though the plastic includes a protective coat, the UV rays from the sun deteriorate the coat over time (hence the yellow haze you see on your lights if your vehicle is over 10 years old).  

This process can clear not only headlights but also fog lights and tail lights. Just don’t use these steps on glass since you will damage the surface.

1. Soap

You first need to wash off any dirt and debris from the lights with soap and hot water. Car shampoo or dish soap should do the trick. Rinse off the soap, but don’t dry the plastic yet – you need a wet surface for the next step.

2. Sand

First tape the edges of the lights to protect the paint job on your car. Using at least 800 lb. grit sandpaper to begin, sand away the scratches and marks on the plastic covering. Once you see the yellow haze fading away, increase the sandpaper to 1,000 lb. grit, then finish with 2,000 lb. grit.

(Bonus Tip: Toothpaste surprisingly works as a mild abrasive similar to sandpaper. Although not as efficient, toothpaste can hold you over until you have time for a more thorough cleaning of your headlights.

3. Polish

You’ll need an aluminum polishing compound after you rinse away the dust from sanding. Don’t be concerned if it leaves a cloudy look behind; just buff the plastic with a dry microfiber cloth.

4. UV Sealant

To finish, gently rub some UV sealant over the plastic and leave it to dry. Now that you’ve gone through the whole process, you don’t want the sun to ruin your hard work. The sealant will keep your lights shiny for months.
